February Update

The year is now fully back into the swing of things and attendance numbers are back to normal almost; a few regular faces are missing still enjoying a break perhaps; but new faces are joining us each week at the moment which is fantastic.

We participated in round 4 of the Hampshire Judo Team Championships on February 2nd; with mixed results. Ionella again won the womens category; receiving some praise this time round for the technical improvements she has made since joining us last year.

Player of the day was Rafal who returns to competitive Judo after a 20(ish) year break from playing Judo. His third contest was exceptional; he was down by a yuko, but did not give up! He fought valiantly and it was looking like a loss until he turned it around in a moment catching his opponent with a  beautiful Ippon throw for the victory!

We have also enjoyed visiting Ringwood Judo Club and Camberley Judo Club to extend our experiences and also to help our players competing in the British Universities National Championships prepare. Both clubs have made us feel very welcome and it was also a pleasure to host a visit from Ringwood Judo Club at St Marys.

Coming up we have the British Universities Championships on February 22nd where we have three people competing. Then the fifth and final round of the Hampshire Team Championships (March 2nd) where we hope we might be able to bridge the gap between us and Holbrook Judo club to reclaim third place in the county. It will be a tough job but with the progress people are making it might just happen.

The international season starts this weekend also, with the Paris Grand Slam and club coach Lance Wicks will be attending many events again this year. Starting with the Rome Continental Open in Rome. We hope to be able to announce details of a “viewing party” shortly where we shall be getting together to watch an international event together on the big screen via htp://ippon.tv

A big thank you to all our visitors and to the new people joining us and keeping us growing. Of course a just as big thank you to the regulars who come and make the club the fun (if exhausting) training it is!

Thank you Ringwood Judo Club

Last night we had a visit from the Ringwood Judo Club, who brought a strong cadre of players to join our Tuesday night Randori session.

They came in response to our invitation via Facebook to all Hampshire Judo clubs and players to visit on a Tuesday night. We are inviting people as we are preparing the university student members of the club for the BUCS National Championships in February.

To further our progresison we will also be visiting other clubs in the build up to BUCS. Starting with a visit to Camberley Judo Club this Friday and then Ringwood Judo Club on Wednesday (be sure to tell Lance if you would like to come).

So a big thank you to all those from Ringwood who came and visited us and helped our team prepare; we appreciate your friendship and look forward to visiting you next week!

Welcome to 2014

Welcome to 2014!

The club starts back on January 7th 2014 at 8pm as normal.

Tuesday is an open training session, primarily randori with coaching as required. Sunday will be the more technical session of the week and be the main time we work on syllabus and techniques.

We have some big events on the calendar over the first quarter of the year so we will be doing additional training for those interested. We compete almost immediately on February 2nd.

As always, novices are very very welcome. You can come to either session.

Womens team extend their dominance.

Our womens team has been extending the dominance they are showing in the Hampshire Judo Team Championships by winning the London Universities Judo Open on the 24th of November.

judo-win-bothLaura won the -57kg category despite and Ionela the +78kg category.

The event was well attended with players from as far away as Scotland and Northern Ireland attending. The team as a whole put in great performances (Ilya narrowly missing out on Bronze and Sergei having toughest day and just missing out on a Bronze medal match).

With the third round of the Hampshire Judo Team Championships on the 1st of December on “home turf” at St Marys Leisure Centre (2pm) we hope for a good result to lift us from our fouth place back into the top 3.

Women hold top spot at Hampshire Team Championships

The club recently participated in the second round of the Hampshire Team Championships. Our men formed a combined team with Southampton University and managed to secure third place whilst our women again won the day.

This month it was the turn of our rookie sensation Ionela Nane to claim first place in the female open weight event. Under the watchful eye of team mate Laura Day (last months winner) Ionela fought her way past the other athletes to claim top spot when she reversed last months result against Eleanor Stephens of AWE Judo Club.

Sadly as we had to share points with Southampton University, we slipped one place in the overall standings and now sit 1 point behind Southampton University in fourth place.

This is the second month in a row that we have claimed the top position in the female category, so we are building a reputation as a strong training centre for female Judo players! The next round is on December 1st and we hope to field a full team and claw our way higher in the standings!

Training session with Danny Murphy

A big thank you to Danny Murphy for coming and coaching last night.

All who came left exhausted and smiling after an amazing session. As well as being a strong player he is one of the higher qualified coaches in the area. He is the county squads manager and he really put us all through a tough work out.

It was perfect preparation for this weekend when the club again competes in the Hampshire Judo Team Championships. We are aiming to increase our overall position from third place which hold presently.

My favourite quote of the night from one of our female members was

Pure Insanity 😛

HTCs Round 1 Report

ThrowHTC1Sunday 6th October saw the club compete in the opening round of the new Hampshire Judo Team Championships.

The mens team was short on numbers but after enlisted the help of James from AWE in the 90+ category we were able to compete albeit with a disadvantage of only having three players.

Sergei and Johny did well in this our opening competition of the year. We managed one contest win against Southampton University; 2 against Holbrook and 1 against Fleming Park. Only the Priory/Portsmouth University team managed to pull the “clean sweep” despite our diminished numbers (especially when Johny had to pull out injured).

Along with a big debt of gratitude to James; we owe our womens team a huge thank you for their spectacular result!

Jonela who joins us as a novice this semester performed well in her first competition; especially as she has only a week or so of Judo to draw upon. Her first contest was against Eastleigh Judokwai and she won it decisively by Ippon against one of last years regular competitors. Second contest was against club mate Laura… more on that later.
Third contest she beat  her opponent from Holbrook by Wazari. In her last match she competed against AWE and another regular from last year; she led all the way before being caught for Ippon with what was probably the throw of the day.
The two wins put Jonela in third place in the category and amazing result given her inexperience and an outstanding testament to her potential.

Laura also represented the club in the womens division and is new to the team this year, joining us as a 1st Kyu. Her technical skills were apparent and she dispatched all her opponents to be the overall winner on the day.
Her final contest of the day was against the AWE, who had won all her matches by Ippon until meeting Laura in the final contest of the category. It was a very close match with Laura winning by a mere yuko in the end!
This put Laura in the lead by 1 win and gave her 1st place!

This year the points system for the championships mean that for the men every match won, the club earns 5 championship points. A loss one point. In the female category; it is slightly more complicated in that the points awarded are based on the number of women in the category.

So on Sunday we collected only 4 points from our mens team; but the women collected 8 points. This gave us 12 points in total and third equal overall with Fleming Park. Last year’s champions Southampton University start the season in second place and Priory/Portsmouth University lead after the first event.

The next event is on the third of November and now we are getting class numbers back to normal levels we should do even better!

Thank you to all that attended on the weekend and thank you for Gary Hill from Southampton Uni for the great photo.

Hampshire Team Championships Round 1

This weekend marks the opening round of the new Hampshire Judo Team Championships, which our club is hosting again this year.

The championships is a kyu grade team event for men and a kyu grade round-robin event for women. Our club came third last year and we intend to improve on this in 2013/2014.

The event is at our home, St Marys Leisure Centre, 2pm on 6 October 2013. Members who wish to participate should have a current BJA license ( http://www.britishjudo.org.uk/join/ ) and bring three pounds entry fee.

Spectators are free, so if you are not playing this time, please do come along and watch. Our team will appreciate the support; also any volunteers who would not mind helping on the day would be appreciated.

Welcome Freshers!

A big hello and welcome to all the new students from Southampton Solent University who join us as the 2013 academic year starts. A big thank you to our existing student members who attended the university Sports Fair and helped encourage people to come along.

Our first session open to students is this Sunday at 4pm, which is our new regular Sunday timeslot for this year. The session is scheduled for two hours and is at St Marys Leisure Centre in the main hall. Sundays are going to be our regular Randori session, but for the next few weeks it will be lighter so new members can acclimatise.

New students please do join the Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ssujudo/ and say hello.

The first chance for you to compete is on the 6th of October, then two events in November and one last one at the start of December. So lots of chances to play! 🙂

Any questions, just ask.
