Samurai Judo club open tournament report

Iain Muir - Bronze Medalist!
Iain Muir – Bronze Medalist!

Iain Muir 95 kg, of Southampton City Judo Club Lifted a Bronze medal in the men’s heavy weight division at the Samurai Judo club open tournament on Sunday 11th of Nov 2012; he narrowly missed silver on points.

The tournament had 134 players, 2 mats, and a very large number of spectators showing lots of support, the tournament was really well organised and everyone had a fantastic days Judo, the standard was good and there was a very pleasant family vibe.

More beginners, more nations, more events!

So our mat continues to be busy, with more newcomers joining us again this week!

We were joined by new novices and experienced players this week, which is great for our development as a club. Strong numbers on the mat making for busy, cheerful sessions of people working hard  and getting a great sweat on!  Not only is the club full of new faces; we are full of faces from different nations. We have people from Algeria through Zurich on the mat and that is great.

This is all excellent for our preparation for events coming up.

On the 24th, the University Students of the club will be going up to London to compete in the London Universities Open. On the 2nd of December we host round three of the Hampshire Judo Team Championships and all members of the club can compete in that. Hopefully regaining our number one position!

Our Thursday session remains a harder work session with mainly Randori. Sunday is lighter and more technical. It is where we will be working on technique and on technical assessment for gradings.

There is still plenty of room for more, so if you live in or around Southampton come on down and say hello!

Hampshire Team Championships (Round 2).

Today (November 4th), we participated in the second round of the Hampshire Judo Team Championships. Last month we topped the table, this month our fortunes were reversed and we came last on the day and have slipped to Third on the overall standings table.

Match 1 versus Fleming Park.

Last month we won a close 3-2 match against Fleming Park, this month they beat us 5-0 in the opening match of the day. The Fleming Park team manage to rack up five Ippon wins in a row.

Match 2 versus Southampton University.

The “derby match” proved to be unsuccessful for us, we were unable to repeat last months 4-1 victory and everything was reversed with Southampton University making it a mirror image and winning 1-4

Match 3 versus Holbrook Judo Club.

Our last match was against newcomers Holbrook Judo Club (from Gosport), this was our closest match of the day it turned out. Holbrook took an early lead, then we won one, they took the third and use the fourth. Sadly (for us), Holbrook took the last match leaving us with the wooden spoon after a 3-2 defeat.

Despite the losses, a good day was had by all and some great performances put in by the team. The level of the Team Championships is rising and the numbers growing making it more competitive. We suffered from a few of our regular players being absent who could perhaps have changed some of the results. We hope that everyone will ne back for the third round on December 2nd at St Marys Leisure Centre (3pm).

But it is not all doom and gloom, we stil hold third position on the overall table for the championships, which looks like this:

Hampshire Judo Team Championships Standings (16+ Years).
(After two rounds, pending confirmation)

1. Southampton Uni (27)
2. Fleming Park (12)
3. Southampton Solent (7)
4. Holbrook (6)
5. AWE (1)

Hampshire Judo Team Championships Round 2

Hampshire Judo Team Championships Round 2

Tomorrow (November 4th, 2012) we host the second round of the Hampshire Team Championships!

16+ years 3pm-6pm:

St Marys Leisure Centre, Saint Mary’s Road, Southampton, SO14 0BL.
£3 per player
5 Person teams, 4 male, 1 female.

The team championships is a relaxed informal single mat event, focussed on novices, so ideal for those new to Judo. I hope all club members will come along and compete and/or help run the event so we can again show all our guests what sort of great hosts we can be.

News coverage of club training.

We recently had a visit form a TV camera crew, who filmed us training in St Marys Leisure Centre. Features interview with coach Lance Wicks and captain of sister club Southampton Solent University Judo Club, Johnny Watch.

Hampshire Team Championships #1 Results.

Today the club competed in the new Hampshire Judo Team Championships at our home venue, Southampton Solent University’s St Marys Leisure Centre.

Judo Sunday Oct 7th 2012 from SonarTV on Vimeo.

In this the first event of the series, we competed against Southampton University Judo Club and Fleming Park Judo Club.

For some this was their first event, others a return to competing after time off ranging from months to years. All in all the standard of the Judo across teams was very high and exciting, with Ippon throws being the dominant score.

Our team fought amazingly well and below are the results of all the matches:
Southampton Solent (Southampton City) 3,  Fleming Park 2.

In this close match, Fleming park took the initial lead when thier experience veteran Steve Kemish threw our Iain Muir for Ippon. This was followed by Gary Pike being caught by Fleming Park’s Steve Jones for another clean Ippon.

Ilya Kalugin then gained us our first win against Rob Brenner with his own Ippon score. Mohamed Sahed followed and caught Brad Manning for the fourth Ippon of the day, evening up the scores to 2-2.

Peter Boniface (Southampton) then faced up opposite Liam Carr (Fleming Park) for the deciding fight in the match. This nail biter was very even with Liam’s Ju Jitsu background making him a real danger especially on the ground. Luckily for us Peter was able to absorb the pressure and respond catching Liam for an Ippon and giving us the match!

Southampton Solent University (Southampton City) 4 – Southampton University 1.

In our second match of the day, we faced up against Southampton University for a “Derby Match”. The match started out with a suprise match, our very own Garry Pike fought Iain Muir; again one of ours in a friendly Heavyweight match up as Southampton University did not have a Heavyweight on with them. Iain caught Gary for Ippon  opening up the account for the team.

Ilya fought the very skillful Daniel Spencer from Southampton University in a brilliant match that was very close but ending in our favor with yet another Ippon scored. Next up Mohamed fought Will Betts and Mohamed won the match comfortably by Wazari giving the team an unbeatable third win. Last to fight was Peter who fought Sarah Cooper, Sarah unfortunately did not have any other females to fight so chose to fight Peter rather than take the easy win by default, displaying the real Judo fighting spirit.

This made the final result  4-1 to us (although technically the result was a much closer 2-1 to us once we remove the first and last fights).

Fleming Park vs. Southampton University

The other match of the day was between the other two teams, another all Ippon affair between the other two teams attending. Southampton University winning the match 4-1 including another default winn for Sarah and a great display of shime waza by Liam Carr who strangled out Vlad Bist to give Fleming Park their only win of the match.

Standings:

  1. Southampton City (Southampton Solent University)
  2. Southampton University
  3. Fleming Park

After the official matches were completed, we were able to have some individual matches where all participants got more fights. This was great fun with more big scores and Ippons being earned.

Unfortunately due to some miscommunication some teams were given incorrect times and missed the opportunity to compete with us, we look forward to meeting them at the next event which we will host on November 2nd at St Marys.

We were fortunate that the SonarTV team were able to film the event and we will post the video as soon as it is available! We would like to thank all the volunteers from BJA Hampshire who provided referees and officials as well as SportSolent, SonarTV and Hampshire County Council in particular who are supporting this new competition series possible!

Sundays are back!!

We are pleased to say that our Sunday training sessions are back!

Starting on September 30th we return to training on Thursdays and Sundays. The session on Sunday being at 5:30pm at St Marys.

As club we have grown immensely and are growing at a great pace currently with lots on new beginners and experienced players joining us. The extra session will hopefully help spread the load so that we can fit everyone on the mat and ensure everyone is getting as much as they deserve from our club.

Looking forward to having you along for the extra session per week.

Sports Fair – September 27th

For any Southampton Solent University students.

On September 27th the sports fair takes place at St Mary’s Leisure Centre.

Judo has a stand there and we always collect a good number of new and experienced players there.

This year the competition schedule is better than ever and students will get to compete in 7 events “at home” at St Mary’s as well as competing further away at BUCS etc.

Pop down to the fair, or email Lance for info on Judo at the university.

More new faces!

Fantastic session on Thursday, a full mat and 3 newcomers!

Getting crowded with all the new people; and this before we get our annual influx of university students! 🙂

We continue our Thursday sessions all year, and in a couple of week restart our Sunday afternoon sessions.

Also, on October 7th we are competing in (and hosting) the first round of the Hampshire Judo Team Championships. You need to have a BJA license and be a minimum of a 6th Kyu to play.

Great work everyone!
