Judo at Southampton City Judo Club is on this week!
Don’t forget a water bottle, even though the dojo is air conditioned it’ll be hot. So bring a bottle for the water cooler in the dojo.
Hi all,
A quick announcement that there will be no sessions between July 15th and 22nd.
Sorry for short notice, please spread the information.
Southampton City Judo Club needs more coaches, are you interested?
If you have a coaching qualification (or would like to earn one) and are interested in supporting and helping grow our amazing Judo club then please contact Lance (lw@judocoach.com).
We would like to have some new regular coaches, new guest coaches, stand-by coaches.
Your commitment can be one session or a regular session or anything in between. Ideally you are BJA qualified, if not we are happy to look at helping you get qualified. We have a small budget available to cover coaching certification and or pay expenses for sessions you run.
We are also looking for a person/people to get involved in running the club.
Specifically, we’d like to get people involved in organising social media (we have twitter, facebook, instagram and youtube as well as the website). We would also love to have people working together to help put on events (group training, competitions, etc). Someone who is interested in social activities and building our off the mat activities would be great also.
If you are interested in doing any of the above, or something else not mentioned (fund raising for new mats for example), please get in touch.
What a busy month May 2018 was for Southampton City Judo Club! It started with an amazing evening spent introducing the Scouts of 21st Romsey Scout Group to Judo.
The evening was for the Endeavour scouts and they seemed to enjoy their first taste of Judo. Quite a broad range of Judo aspects were shared from sword work (wooden not steel) from Kime no Kata, though to self-defence ( Kodokan Goshin-jutsu ) and of course tachi-waza where some nage-komi was even possible and randori with our Judo coach Lance.
We shared the core values of Judo ( Honesty, Modesty, Courage, Respect, Self-Control, Friendship, Courtesy and Honour) which matched up very well with the core values of the scouting movement and provided a great opportunity for the leaders of the group to highlight the similarities. We have signposted Fleming Park Judo Club for the younger members to attend if they wanted to try more.
The month progressed on with lots happening including our completing our exploration of the Kodokan Goshin-Jutsu and our Sunday sessions will for June be focused on covering the grading syllabus and ensuring everyone knows all the techniques they need for their next belt grading. The hope being to grade everyone we can up before the summer and especially before the student influx when the new academic year begins at Solent University.
This month we have had quite a few enquiries from adult beginners which is always fantastic and their timing is brilliant as the club becomes a little quieter as we head into the summer and more space (and attention) is available. We are also working through technique so again a great time to learn. June 2018 looks like we will have quite a few new people, so if you have not been along for a while, it is the perfect time to return.
Wednesday Uchi-komi sessions are ideal as their is no throwing, but it is a great work-out and fantastic for technique development which will help with the Tuesday and Thursday randori sessions. Sunday remains a relaxed session and in June it is a great opportunity to come down and say what you want to work on and the sessions will be shaped around what those attending want to practice.
Tuesday and Thursday Randori sessions will become a little more mixed this month.
With the students fading away as the academic year draws to a close we lose some of our membership and gain from other clubs that close (either now or over the summer), so expect the Randori sessions to be a bigger mix of tachi-waza and ne-waza. So although the Tuesday will still be our primary throws sessionand Thursday groundwork; both shall have more of the other aspect. This means whatever evening you are able to attend we shall have both standing and groundwork on offer.
Stay tuned for more as we plan to visit some other clubs and host a visit in June/July.
Congratulations to everyone who joined in and participated in our competition on Sunday!
Thanks to those who helped make the event possible, specifically Tash and SonarTV, Southampton Solent University and of course Roland and Jordan Fugh. These small events are vital to the club and the support of participants, officials and our friends from other clubs is very much appreciated!
We were very fortunate to be able to live stream the event on SonarTV so everyone can watch their contests over at https://www.facebook.com/sonartv/videos/vb.159460054066322/1881653641846946/?type=3&theater
The results are included in the PDFs linked to below.
It was great to have a randori after the competition and to observe coaches and players from other clubs spend time together sharing ideas and generally enjoying each others company!
Today we are pleased to be hosting a small group of friends from other clubs in a friendly competition at St Mary’s.
We start at 2pm, and hope to have some live video so stay tuned.
Our normal 3pm kata session is not going ahead today.
This weekend the club will be closed on Sunday due to Easter.
We will be back on Tuesday for Tachi waza randori to burn of the Easter egg calories. 😉
Till then enjoy this video from our last competition back in December, which might motivate you to train hard for our team competition at the end of April.
Due to the poor weather we are cancelling tonights session.
This week has been busy for us as we prepare for the BUCS national championships later this month.
On Sunday we worked on combinations of throws by exploring the go no sen no kata. This is an entirely new kata for us so lots to discover.
Monday saw us visit our friends at Ringwood Judo Club for some additional randori. It was a great workout and we look forward to hosting them soon.
Tuesday was our regular tachi waza randori, which was as spirited an effort as ever.
Wednesday, uchi komi night went well and Ethan again lead a thorough stretching session at the end.
Thursday was a busy ne waza randori session, which had a great feel to it and people had to be encouraged to leave as the centre staff tried to lock the doors.
This week we also received the video documentary footage about the club and December’s competition, expect to see it online next week.
