Starting back for 2018 and meetup

The club restarted training sessions on Tuesday January 9th, 8pm and we resume with our 4 days a week of Judo:

  • Tuesday, 8pm, Tachi-waza (throwing techniques) – Randori
  • Wednesday, 8pm, Tachi-waza (throwing techniques) – Uchi Komi
  • Thursday, 8pm, Ne-waza (grownd techniques) – Randori
  • Sunday, 3pm, Tachi-waza and Ne-Waza – Kata and skill work

On Saturday January 20th, we had an informal meetup to discuss the plans for the year. This was really productive and our plans for the first quarter of 2018 include:

  • Competing in the British Universities Judo Championships (February)
  • Competing in the Malta Open Judo Championships (March)
  • Competing and Hosting a Team Competition in Southampton (April)

We are also planning some social activities, additional conditioning training and a few other surprises.

Southampton Judo Grading Week, December 12-14 2017.

This week Southampton City Judo Club will be doing technical kyu gradings Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights (8pm, 12-14 December 2017).

These grading sessions are open to all adult kyu grades in the area (majority of the grading is expected in the yellow-green belt range) so if you are an adult kyu grade in Southampton, please do some along and we shall test you.

The club follows the BJA Grading syllabus and if you would like your grade registered nationally, you will need to bring you BJA record book, valid current license and £12 grading fee.

To obtain a BJA license please visit: https://britishjudo.secure.force.com/membership

We recommend you print and bring along the “Record of Achievement” for your level.

We will be having guests from other clubs in attendance, so even if you are not grading, the sessions will hopefully be a nice social training for all.

So study hard and we look forward to proving your knowledge and putting everyone in the belt they deserve!

TeamSolent Inter-Club Competition

This past Saturday (December 2nd, 2017) we were pleased to host a friendly Judo competition between Southampton Solent University, Southampton University and Winchester University.

Attendance was good and some terrific contests were had, we enjoyed a quiet drink afterwards with our friends afterwards.

The event consisted of an official round, where open weight male and female categories were competed in. Then an unofficial round where a second male competition was held along with a mixed category where the lighter males were able to compete with the females to provide a larger pool of contests for all involved.

Our friends David and Malcom Tooby came and officiated, for which we were very happy and appreciative.

Wednesday sessions!!

Great news everyone!

Due to how busy we have been recently, we are able to offer a fourth training session per week.

Starting this week we will have sessions Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.

Tuesday 8pm will remain our main throwing session and hardest workout.

Wednesday 8pm will be a uchi komi (drills) session with a good stretching/mobility component.

Thursday 8pm is our groundwork session and a good workout.

Sunday 3pm is our technique and Kata session. And is a chilled out relaxing session to work on skills and explore formal demonstration aspects of Judo.

We hope the fourth session per week will help balance numbers across our busy sessions as well as allowing more training for all that want it.

Welcome new students

September welcomes the new university year and new students looking for our club.

As part of the Southampton Solent University we incorporate the TeamSolent Judo within our regular Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday sessions.

After the quiet period over summer, the dojo has been busy recently and we look forward to seeing new faces over the coming weeks.

We return to our regular schedule:

  • Tuesday 8pm. Mainly throws, mainly randori, mainly a tough work out.
  • Thursday 8pm. Groundwork mainly, not as hard work as Tuesday; but you will leave sweaty for sure.
  • Sunday 3pm. Chilled Sunday session. Technique work. Relaxed, light workout. Bring a friend, a younger sibling, do something with your Sunday afternoon.

See you soon!
